Dr. John Cashman embarks on Epic bike race for disabled children

Dr. John Cashman, an orthopaedic consultant from Galashiels, is racing in one of the most grueling bike races in the world to raise money for disabled children. Dr. Cashman is participating in the eight-day Cape Epic mountain bike race in South Africa, which began on March 21st.  Cashman, works as an orthopedic surgeon in Malawi at the Beit CURE International Children’s Hospital, raised sponsorships in support of the hospital and its patients.

Alongside 1200 other riders, the 43-year-old will cycle almost 1000 kilometres in extreme temperatures and across rough terrain, including hill climbs totally 16,000 metres – twice the height of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world.

Although a bit apprehensive of the challenging bike race, Cashman is thrilled to use this opportunity to help children suffering with disabilities. The surgeon has already raised around £5000 of his fundraising target which is to be spent on completing the building of a new operating theatre and physiotherapy unit at Beit CURE Malawi.

“We are the only children’s orthopaedic hospital in the country and serve a population of over 13 million,” says Cashman. “There are an estimated 300,000 children in Malawi with physical disabilities who might benefit from our services. Children and their guardians are treated, clothed and fed absolutely free of charge, thanks to the generosity of our supporters.”
